At MEDNET Direct we love dogs, and we are very excited to recognize mutts by celebrating Mutt's Day. This annual event was created to celebrate lovable, loyal, and one of a kind mutts. Mutts are often called halfbreeds, Heinz 57's, and more recently "designer" dogs (designed just for you).

Mutt's can be a wonderful addition to your family, and don't carry the expensive price tag that purebreds do. Mutts are usually more tame animals and don't have undesirable personality traits or attitudes that some purebred dogs do. It has also been said that mutts are often healthier than purebred dogs, because purebred dogs often have physical issues caused by inbreeding and selective breeding.

Your Mutt is just as unique as it's owner, often possessing the best physical and personality traits of it's parents. If you have been considering getting a new pet for your family, consider adopting one of the many one of a kind, mutts at your local animal shelter.

Even the most responsible pet owner can forget something once and a while, and this summer MEDNET Direct would like to remind everyone that pets are people too.

Pets need to be kept cool and hydrated in the summer heat, just as people do. Every year workers across America have had the opportunity to take their children to work, but now many workplaces are embracing Take Your Dog To Work Day, which falls on June 25!

If you are lucky enough to be able to take your pet to work with you this summer, remember these few tips to make sure your dog doesn’t become an office distraction. Bring a leash to restrain your pet is necessary and to take it outside for bathroom breaks. It’s also important to only bring your pet if it is well trained and gets along well with other animals, otherwise it most likely won’t be invited back.

Bring along a few treats and dog toys to occupy your pet while you work. It may also be helpful to bring along some puppy pads in case of an accident. You should also send an email to co-workers to let them know in advance in case some people are allergic to your pet.

Many of the television ads that promote pet adoption only feature dogs. While we really do want dogs to be adopted into loving homes, we want cats to find great homes too!

According to the American Humane Society about 4 million cats end up in shelters every year, including thousands born every spring and summer during “kitten season.” This summer we want to help make sure they all go to loving homes, so if you plan to adopt a cat, try to adopt a shelter cat.

Due to kitten season, summer is the perfect (and very important) time to adopt a new cat, because June Is Adopt A Shelter Car Month! At your local pet shelter, you will find many cats who would love to go home with you from baby kittens to mature cats.

Dog Walking Is Great Spring Exercise

This spring, walk off the winter blues with your dog. Many of us are hitting the gym and looking for ways to shed the winter pounds and get a fresh start this spring.

Walking is one of the best exercises anyone can do to improve their health. Dogs also need to get walked frequently, and we bet they are just as anxious as you to get out in the fresh spring air. Get the exercise you and your dog need by taking some long walks, or jogs this spring.

While walking you'll probably find many pet owners who are doing the same, so you and your pet will have a chance to meet the neighborhood dogs. There are also many outdoor malls that allow dogs, so take your dog for a mall walk if your housing complex doesn't have sidewalks or walking trails. Another great place to walk is at the local park where there are many walking, biking and skating trails. Your dog will love all the foreign smells and the abundance of squirrels and birds to chase at the park too!

To prepare for your walk, you'll need a reliable dog collar and leash to walk your pet. If you are training your pet, a choke chain would also be helpful. You'll also want to put a couple dog treats in your pocket to reward your pet for not pulling the leash and listening to other commands. Be sure to pack some dog waste bags as well to clean up after your pet if he or she stops for a bathroom break.

May Flowers Cause Pet Allergies

Every May is Allergy Awareness Month. What most people do not know is that allergies are not just limited to humans, pets can develop allergies as well. Unfortunately pets cannot tell you that they have allergies and will rely on their owners to notice the symptoms.

This Spring, as May Flowers littered with pollen and other allergens are in full bloom be sure to watch your pet for signs of irritations. If your dog seems to be sneezing or itching more than often, he or she may have seasonal allergies. This can be confirmed by a vet and medication can be prescribed.

You can also help your pet if they suffer from seasonal allergies by keeping grass and other plants trimmed and even stop plating certain plants if they bother your pet. Putting up garden fencing or blocking pets from certain plants can also be helpful. You can also be sure to give your pets baths regularly to remove any allergens trapped in their fur. Washing their bedding and even outdoor toys often is another great allergen prevention method.

Indoor allergies can also develop, so it's important to dust, vacuum and clean your air vents regularly. You'll also want to refrain from using latex toys, as this is a common allergen, and use detergent and cleaners that are hypo-allergenic.

April Showers Cause Muddy Pet Paws

We all know the age old slogan, April Showers Bring May Flowers, however, April Showers also cause pet's paws to be muddy.

When pets paws get muddy there are several solutions to help keep your floors and carpets from inheriting the mess also. One easy solution is to keep a towel or washable puppy pad by the door. Use this as a doggie door mat, or just wipe your pet paws before they come inside. Many pet owners find other uses for their washable puppy pads in addition to training. Some pet owners have even trained their pets to wipe their paws before entering.

In addition to keeping your pet's laws clean and dry, it's important to keep the rest of your pet clean from mud splatters and spring skunk encounters. If your pet simply has rolled in the mud a bit too much, check out our selection of dog shampoo and conditioner. Wash Hands Often- This is a longtime mantra of moms, health care industries and the CDC. It’s a good mantra. Wash you hands, and do it often. Hand washing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.

Travel Safely- Even if you are just headed off to the mall, or a holiday party, make sure you buckle your seatbelt, keep kids in the appropriate child safety seat, and don’t drink and drive. These few everyday safety precautions can often be forgotten during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. If air travel or long distance traveling are on your holiday itinerary, review health precautions made by your destination’s health professionals, such as appropriate vaccines and precautions to take.

Take Indoor & Outdoor Safety Precautions- Since most residential fires occur during the winter months, keep candles and open flames away from flammable materials and never leave flames unattended. Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home if you don’t already have one. Test them once a month, and replace batteries twice a year. When hanging holiday decorations and lights outdoors, use safety precautions such as using a ladder and a safety harness when hanging high lights. On the indoors, use a step stool to hand decorations instead of unstable furniture. Always turn off the electricity before you mess with it, and never overload circuits.

Make efforts to ensure their feeding habits are not interrupted and that they are not locked up in the house for more than 8 hours without a bathroom break. Simply stop at home to let out the dog and give he/she some attention before you dash out to those holiday sales.

Also if your pet is exhibiting any abnormal behavior, take him/her to the vet as soon as possible. If your pet is ill, it's best to catch it early to help them get better quickly. Remember, your pet cannot tell you that he/she is not feeling well.

If someone in your household is ill, even with a cold, make sure they stay away from your pet as much as possible. We know that diseases can be transmitted from the human to the animal, so try and limit your contact with your pet if you are sick and take precautions to prevent the spread of germs as you would between any member of your household.

If being green is important to you, there are a number of ways that you can care for your puppy in an environmentally responsible way. Here are a couple tips to make you and your pup an eco-friendly duo.

Adopt your puppy. Puppy mills are not only cruel, but they are wasteful eco-dumps. Do not support the puppy mill industry and adopt your puppy from a shelter.

Fix your pup. The Humane Society estimates that there are more than 70,000 puppies and kittens born daily in the USA. This rampant overpopulation not only strains resources, but it also leads to neglected animals. Spay or neuter your pet to help curb the overpopulation that leads to the need for shelters.

Use eco-friendly products. You can find an eco-friendly version of all things doggie these days. There are durable hemp toys, washable puppy pads for house breaking, and chemical-free cleaning products for bath time. Take a moment to read labels and the green products will be easy to spot.

Compost your puppy’s waste. Don’t just toss Fido’s poo into the garbage. Sadly, landfills are incredibly inefficient environments for breaking down materials. Instead, dig a compost area in your yard, away from any vegetables or plants you plan to eat. This will help keep your garden fertilized and also make waste disposal fast and easy.

Buy quality food. Buy your pup food that comes from quality, organic ingredients. Most inexpensive dog foods come from diseased or dying cattle and use grains grown with harsh chemicals. If you are feeling really eco-friendly and motivated, you can even use your leftovers to make your buddy’s diner. Stick to vegetables, meats, fruit and grains, because leftover tiramisu is not so good for puppies. Other foods to avoid include raw meat, grapes or raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, walnuts, mustard seed, any form of garlic, mushrooms, moldy food, yeast dough, chocolate or candy, and artificial sweeteners or fats. Winter Care for Your Dog

Winter time is quickly approaching and while the winter months can be lots of fun for you and your dog, there are a few precautions you should take to make sure that your dog is healthy and happy all winter long. Here are some recommended precautions.

Increase Fido’s caloric intake. It is wise to increase your pup’s protein intake during the winter months. This helps your dog maintain a thick, warm coat.

Don’t shave your dog’s coat. It might sound like common sense, but it is worth stating. Do not shave your buddy down to the skin. Fido needs a winter coat too.

Don’t let your dog air dry. Common sense again, but just for the record, if you wash your dog, dry him or her completely before you go outside. Also, when you get home from your walk in snowy or icy conditions, be sure to completely dry your pup’s feet and legs. This is not only for their comfort but also to prevent them from ingesting excess salt and harmful anti-freeze type chemicals. Left alone, wet feet can also chap, crack and bleed.

Make sure their bed is warm and insulated. Check their sleeping area for drafts. Give them a warm blanket and pillow to make sure their nights are comfy and cozy. You can also leave them a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel (to prevent burning). Your dog will love it.

Get Fido some duds. Sweaters and coats are a good addition in very cold weather. It’s not a Paris Hilton thing; it will truly improve your pup’s quality of life. If you own a short-haired breed think about getting a turtle neck that extends the length of their body, all the way to the tail. They will appreciate it (and look stylin'!)

Don’t leave your best friend outside for prolonged periods. It’s cold out there and they will suffer. It also increases their chances of getting sick. Keep your dog inside as much as possible, and when they do go outside, go with them. If you’re too cold, changes are so are they.

Keep your buddy on the leash. When the ground is frozen, it becomes easy for a dog to lose their scent, and thus easier for a dog to get lost. Because of this, more dogs go missing in the winter months so make sure they always have their tags on. This is a dangerous time of year for your pup to go on a walk-about. This is especially true if you live near a pond or lake.

Don’t leave your dog alone in the car. Just like the summer months, your car becomes a hostile environment in extreme weather. Dogs can freeze to death in a closed, frigid environment.

Be careful with your puppy or elderly dog. Puppies cannot tolerate cold the way a full-grown dog can. Same goes for very elderly or sickly dogs. If it is quite cold out, you may need to use a puppy pads for house training and wait till spring to start moving them outside. Frostbite occurs when a part of the dog (usually paws, ears, or tail) get so cold that the tissue literally forms internal ice crystals. This can be very painful and cause permanent damage. It is also hard to spot right away so the best course of action is avoiding frost-bite educing situation. Signs of hypothermia are more apparent. Look for shivering, depression, lethargy, and weakness. The dog’s muscles will eventually stiffen and their heart rate will drop. They may even become catatonic. Obviously, this is a scary and dangerous ailment; seek out hospitalization right away.
